The folder for “Not Lovers, Not Even Friends” which has the voice memo below, along with the lyrics, has a creation date of Jan. 2, 2022. My memory tells me that it was actually concieved in mid-late 2021 and it just took me a few months to actually store the proof of it properly.
At the time I made this, it was definitely way more pop leaning than what my writing typically would’ve been. Now I think maybe I tilt a bit more naturally in that direction but I remember at this time, being enthralled that I wrote what felt like a catchy chorus. The energy of it was very much bred from the Nobody Really Makes Love Anymore era of my writing where it explored a lot of themes of the absence of love from both the world and the self. I think that theme was encapsuated well but there was something about the lyrics that just felt a bit disjointed to me…I don’t know how to pinpoint it, but it just didn’t feel like it was a song that reached its highest potential. And to this point anyway, I don’t think it can reach its highest potential without sounding either too cheesy or too redundant from something that’s already been made.
Still, it’s nice to revisit this one from time to time just to remember where I was at while writing it, and each time I listen I hope to hear something that I didn’t hear before that will re-peak my interest in it. Hope you enjoy it as well!
