"Footsteps" (unreleased song)
Happy new year everybody!
I’ll be making a few small changes to the content I post on here every month, but one thing that’s sticking around are the bi-weekly shares of unreleased songs…so here is the first one of the new year!
I’m in the process of scoring a ballet for my choreographer girlfriend. She’s creating a work for Ballet Memphis and she was kind enough to hire me to create the score for this new work of hers. It’s going to be a little over 20 minutes, and the work will explore the theme of fate. More specifically, pondering the question as to whether or not fate is created or ordained.
Can we really determine our path and the outcomes in our life? Do our actions truly matter or is everything mapped out for us ahead of time, and we don’t really have as much control as we think? The goal of the work isn’t to answer this question, but just to explore it. (I could go on and on talking about the conversations we’ve had with each other surrounding this work, other questions she wants to explore, the idea that fate is really just a made up thing regardless of what you believe…and how these questions will be explored through a story about aliens….but I will spare you those details for now)
Most of the work will be without vocals, and if words are used it’ll be mostly spoken. But I had an idea to add one section that feels more like an actual song, and give myself a chance to explore this theme lyrically in what I’d hope to be a powerful moment in the work.
So I crafted this song called “Footsteps”, which really just aimed to explore all of the topics I just mentioned. Pondering the steps we take and the weight they each hold. We recorded it, I presented it to my partner and explained the vision….and it was determined that the song would not work. (haha)
BUT, I still really like it, so I’ll share it with you all today. Truthfully, the main guitar riff in this song sounds way too close to another already existing song, so unless I changed that I probably wouldn’t be able to release this one, but it’s safe to post here for now. Hope you enjoy! (ignore the laughter in the beginning, we were just messing around)
